Where NRVRJ Releases Go
New River Valley Regional Jail is a regional jail, not a Floyd County-only facility. It holds people from Floyd and the other member localities, as well as some federal and outside-jurisdiction prisoners. A Floyd booking can end in several ways. Bond, a court release order, or completion of a local sentence may lead back to the community. A sentenced person may then report to probation. Another record may show transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, a different local jail, federal authority, or an agency acting on a detainer. A detainer is a request by another authority to hold or receive a person after the first custody matter ends.
The public NRVRJ result gives a Release Date for that jail episode. It does not publish the reason, exact time, destination, or supervision status in the observed list. A date must therefore be read with the Floyd court docket and the next custody system. A bond order supports a community release but leaves the case pending. A VADOC institutional location means continued state custody. A VADOC district-office result points to community supervision. A new VINE facility, BOP record, or agency confirmation may instead document a transfer.
A person can be released from NRVRJ while remaining in legal custody elsewhere. Confirm the destination before treating the event as community release.
Confirm an NRVRJ Release
The official NRVRJ inmate lookup is the first local historical check because both search routes offer an Include released inmates option. The page uses HTTP on a nonstandard port, so some networks may block it. If that occurs, enter through the NRVRJ home page or call the jail. The full Floyd County search and records path is also available on the released inmates home page.
- Search by first name, last name, and date of birth. Check Include released inmates before submitting.
- If known, try Booking Number, Permanent Number, State ID, County ID, FBI Number, or ICE Number through the identifier route.
- Match the name, date of birth, Booking Number, and Permanent ID. Record the displayed Release Date and access date.
- Check Floyd court records for the bond, sentence, dismissal, or release authority. Then search VINE or the likely receiving system.
- Call NRVRJ or request the underlying record when the destination, timing, or disposition remains unclear.
An absent name is not proof of release. The lookup does not state how long past entries remain or how often it refreshes. Names can also fail because of spelling, identity details, or a booking held under another jurisdiction. Use an identifier when possible, then ask the jail to locate the custody episode. For a Floyd arrest that never appears, the Sheriff's Office can help determine whether the person stayed at the courthouse lockup, went to NRVRJ, or moved to another custodian.
NRVRJ Release Record Fields
The public result is narrow but useful. It ties a named person to a specific booking and gives a historical date for the close of that NRVRJ episode. These are the fields observed in the official result list, not a promise that every record contains more detail.

The list does not show the release type, destination, exact time, supervision, or booking photo. It also gives no archive period or update schedule. Ask for the underlying release or transfer record when those facts matter. A narrow request should seek existing fields rather than ask staff to explain what happened.
Note: Handle dates of birth and identifiers with care, and compare more than one field before deciding that two records concern the same person.

The NRVRJ FOIA statement does not publish a detailed form, named officer, fee schedule, or records hours. Start with the facility's main office and ask where to direct a request for the booking and release episode. Describe the person and date range precisely. If NRVRJ does not hold a Floyd Sheriff's record, ask which custodian does.

A well-framed request identifies the full name, date of birth, booking number if known, and the booking date range. Ask for the booking number, admission date and time, release date and time, release disposition or destination if maintained, releasing authority, nonexempt transfer destination, and booking photograph. Also ask for the current written rule on how long released entries stay in the public lookup. Request all reasonably segregable nonexempt portions if part of a document may be withheld.
Virginia law allows redaction or withholding for some imprisonment, investigation, supervision, medical, juvenile, sealed, or expunged material. NRVRJ has not published a flat release-record fee. Ask for an estimate before staff begin a search if cost matters.
NRVRJ Serves Floyd Releases
The New River Valley Regional Jail Authority was formed by the City of Radford and Bland, Floyd, Carroll, Giles, Grayson, and Wythe counties. That shared model explains why the most useful public Floyd jail record sits in Dublin rather than on the Floyd Sheriff's website. It also means an NRVRJ search result should be matched to booking or court jurisdiction. Not every person in the database is a Floyd County prisoner.
The regional jail holds pretrial and sentenced local prisoners. Its history also says it houses federal and outside-jurisdiction inmates. That fact does not make NRVRJ a federal prison. A sentenced federal prisoner belongs in the BOP locator, while a federal pretrial prisoner may remain under U.S. Marshals Service authority in a local bed. The ICE Number search field likewise does not prove an ICE contract or immigration destination.

Why Floyd Releases Are Regional
The NRVRJ history and construction record shows why Floyd's main searchable custody trail is regional. Construction began in May 1997 on a 28-acre site in Dublin Industrial Park. The original 140,000-square-foot project cost $28.4 million, with Virginia paying half. NRVRJ first received prisoners on April 27, 1999. Its initial population was 248 as older local facilities closed.
A 139,000-square-foot addition finished in February 2010 and brought the listed occupancy to 859 beds, or 1,183 when double-bunked. The regulatory directory still lists the Floyd County Lockup. The two entries do different work. The courthouse lockup is a local short-term point, while NRVRJ supplies the regional database and longer custody route used to trace many Floyd releases.

Trace NRVRJ Transfer Records
A court order and a jail release entry answer different questions. Floyd General District Court handles misdemeanors and felony preliminary matters. Floyd Circuit Court handles felony trials and appeals. The docket can disclose bond, dismissal, sentence, and the legal authority for a move, yet it may not record the exact time the jail completed release processing. NRVRJ holds the custody timing and any recorded destination.
Virginia VINE covers local and regional jails and can corroborate a reported custody event. Its official workflow warns that a release notice may reflect transfer. For a state move, use the VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator. For a sentenced federal move, use BOP. ICE's online locator addresses present immigration custody, not historical release. If the next custodian remains unknown, ask NRVRJ for the transfer destination if it is maintained and releasable.
Property questions require a direct call. The NRVRJ property page describes accepted items and hours, but it does not give a release-property pickup process. Do not assume that a visitor-delivery rule applies after release or transfer.
